A Busy Day at Lotherton Hall

Elsie the Housemaid

This story is based on the reflections of Elsie Collins (nee Acomb, born 8 July 1911) who was a temporary housemaid at Lotherton Hall from 1931 to 1932. Elsie was engaged by Miss Routledge, the secretary at Lotherton Hall, to provide extra help in the busy periods of the annual shoot and Christmas. She was 20 years old at the time.

In 2009 Lotherton celebrated being open for 40 years as a museum. We are very interested to hear from anyone who has had a previous connection with the house. Did you work for the Gascoigne family? Or know anyone else who did?  Or maybe you knew the family and visited them here. We would like to collect more stories like Elsie’s and help research what life was like here as a family home.
