Bankfield Museum is housed in a magnificent Victorian mansion, which belonged to Edward Akroyd, the largest woollen manufacturer in Britain. Bankfield became a museum in 1887, retaining many original architectural features. It is now home to an internationally important collection of textiles and costumes from around the world as well as fascinating collections of toys, contemporary crafts and multicultural artefacts. The site is also host to the Duke of Wellington’s Regimental Museum, which traces the history of the regiment from its origins to the present day. In addition the museum hosts an exciting programme of temporary exhibitions.
